Howto setup an MIA email account in Mozilla Thunderbird
These instructions apply to Thunderbird (version 2.0.x, English). Earlier versions or other language versions may vary slightly from the following, however it is advisable to make sure that you use the latest version compatible with your OS. Unless you already have another account set up, the Account Wizard will start automatically. Otherwise you start the wizard from the Tools menu: Click "Account Settings..." and press the "Add Account..." button. I. The Account Wizard
- New Account Setup
- Choose Email account (preselected)
- Identity
- Your Name: John Bloggs
- Email Address: johnb@marxists.org (i.e. your alias)
- Server Information
- Type of (incoming) server: IMAP
- Incoming Server: imap.marxists.org
- Outgoing Server: smtp.marxists.org
- User Names (Note: the preselected values are not correct)
- Incoming User Name: jbloggs
- Outgoing User Name: jbloggs
- Account Name (optional):
- Choose a description (e.g. jbloggs@marxists.org).
- Congratulations!
If you have followed the instructions, the end screen should read:

II. Account Settings
- Select "Server Settings"
- Set "Security Settings" to SSL
- Select "Outgoing Server (SMTP)", select the entry related to "smtp.marxists.org" and press the "Edit..." button, which brings up the "SMTP Server" dialogue box.
- Check SSL in the "Security and Authentication" box
- Choose a description (optional): MIA

III. Trust Certificate
- Examine the certificate to verify that the organization is "Marxists Internet Archive" and select Accept this certificate permanently to avoid this alert in the future.
The same procedure applies for the SMTP certificate.IV. Remember passwords (optional) When you attempt to open your mailbox or send mail you will be prompted to give the appropriate username and/or password. The Password Manager allows you to store these on your computer and protect them with a master password. If you don't do this you'll be prompted (for each account) every time Thunderbird is restarted.
- From the Tools menu, click on "Options ...", select "Privacy" and then the "Passwords" tab.
- Check "Use a master password to encrypt stored password".
- Set a master password by clicking on the "Change Master Password ..." button. You can also edit passwords and user names by clicking on "Edit Saved Passwords".
