28 November, 2006: The Early American Marxism Archive in the USA History section of the MIA has added the following 8 new PDF documents:

The Socialist Party's Appeal, by Eugene V. Debs [Oct. 24, 1912] This 1912 campaign statement by Socialist Party Presidential nominee Gene Debs appeared in the pages of The Independent -- a mainstream news weekly. Debs declares that for the first time since the abolition of slavery "a great moral question cleaves the political atmosphere of this nation." The choice is stark, Debs indicates: "Either capitalism, with its gorgeous wealth and power for its successful devotees and owners, and its brutal, degrading struggle for existence for its workers, will write 'esto perpetua' upon the scroll of Time and this civilization will enter eclipse and decline, as have the civilizations of every previous age, or else capitalism will surrender the scepter of power to socialism and the race will progress to heights undreamed and establish a civilization as far in advance of capitalism in its beneficence to mankind as capitalism is in advance of savagery."

The IWW Scare by Jack Carney [July 26, 1918] This editorial by future member of the NEC of the Communist Labor Party Jack Carney in the pages of Duluth Truth appeals to Socialist Party members to support the Industrial Workers of the World in their time of need. The specter of the IWW had been used by the capitalists as a bogey to split the working class, Carney asserts.

The Michigan Convention, by W.E. Reynolds [event of Feb. 24, 1919] This news report by CLP charter member W.E. Reynolds from the pages of the Left Wing weekly, The Ohio Socialist, sheds light on the unique and turbulent history on the Socialist Party of Michigan.

Letter to Adolph Germer, Executive Secretary SPA, in Chicago from Fred Krafft, Member NEC SPA, in Ridgefield, NJ, July 29, 1919. This brief note from Socialist Party National Executive Committee member Fred Krafft to Executive Secretary Adolph Germer illuminates the politics behind the scenes leading to the suspension of the entire Socialist Party of Ohio by the outgoing NEC.

Report to the National Executive Committee, Socialist Party of America, by Adolph Germer [August 27, 1919] Extensive "State of the Party" report by Executive Secretary Adolph Germer of the Socialist Party to the members of the outgoing NEC on the eve of the 1919 Emergency National Convention.

Circular Letter to All Branches and Locals of the Communist Party of America from C.E. Ruthenberg, Executive Secretary, Oct. 7, 1919. This recently-surfaced circular letter by CPA Executive Secretary C.E. Ruthenberg outlines his party's side of the argument with the Communist Labor Party over the question "Who is blocking Communist unity?"

Debs Calls the Jury of the People to Try Indiana Governor, by Eugene V. Debs [May 20, 1922] Recently freed Socialist leader Gene Debs uses the various legal premises used to convict him to indict the governor of his state for his Jan. 1922 words to the American Legion to the effect that "Debs is the arch-traitor of our country. May the Legion teach him a lesson."

The 'Achievements' of the CC Plenum: Statement of the Communist Party-Majority Group [Nov. 15, 1929] From Nov. 6-8, 1929, the Communist Party USA held the first plenum of its Central Committee in nearly 11 months.

The Green Corn Rebellion in Oklahoma, by Bertha Hale White [events of Aug. 3, 1917] The so-called "Green Corn Rebellion" was one of the seminal events of the socialist movement in Oklahoma, an uprising of radicalized impoverished farmers who purportedly planned to march to Washington, DC in conjunction with others around the country, eating green corn on their way for sustenance, in an effort to remove "Big Slick" Woodrow Wilson from power and establish the Cooperative Commonwealth. Or so the story goes.

Indiana Governor Incites Legion Lawlessness Toward Debs! by Frederic Heath [Events of Jan. 11-13, 1922] On Jan. 11, 1922, Governor Warren T. McCray of Indiana briefly addressed a local post of the American Legion, in its initial phase a proto-fascist organization of former soldiers responsible for a lengthy and growing series of vigilante attacks on persons and property.

‘Let Them Come; I Fear No Man,’ Debs Tells Indiana Governor: Gov. McCray Admits He Counseled American Legion Affront to Debs and Urged He Be Taught a Lesson -- Law and Order Hypocrites Expose Hand. by Frederic Heath [Events of Jan. 16-17, 1922] On Jan. 16, 1922, Terre Haute Socialist Eugene Debs wrote a letter to Indiana Governor Warren T. McCray inquiring about McCray's reported quote that “I am sorry, extremely sorry, that the arch-traitor of our country [Debs] should live in the state of Indiana.”

The Party and the Future, by Victor L. Berger [Aug. 13, 1921] The year 1921 was a watershed for the Socialist Party of America. The internecine war of 1919 had been “won” by the Regular faction and control of the party maintained—but the administration had managed to both rule and ruin.

Letter to the Central Executive Committee of the Communist Party of America from C.E. Ruthenberg in Ossining, NY, March 14, 1922. Letter from imprisoned Communist leader C.E. Ruthenberg to the governing CEC of the Communist Party of America explicitly exonerating the actions of Jay Lovestone in his decision to testify (under compulsion) in the trial of Harry Winitsky in 1920.

Lovestone, Wolfe & Co. Stand Naked in the Marketplace: Unsigned Editorial in The Daily Worker, Nov. 30, 1929. A heated and rather nasty front page editorial from the pages of the CPUSA's daily. Bukharin's capitulation and admission of having made “dangerous errors” in the USSR “has left the latest recruits to the ranks of the enemies of the working class and of the Communist Party of the United States—Lovestone, Wolfe & Co.—stark naked with their renegade sores exposed in the marketplace where capitalism purchases its servants,” the Editorial declares.

Lovestone Ends His Isolation, by Earl Browder [Dec. 23. 1929] Article from the Communist Party's daily press attempting to denigrate expelled party leader Jay Lovestone as a participant in an international alliance of Right Wing elements.

Clique or Class? What's Happening in the ILD? by Benjamin Gitlow [Jan. 1, 1930] This article by Ben Gitlow, a leading member of the “Communist Party-Majority Group” organization headed by Jay Lovestone, charges that a campaign was well underway in the International Labor Defense organization to change its nature from a non-partisan workers' defense organization to the partisan legal defense arm of the so-called “'loyalist' clique"—i.e. the CPUSA.

The Facts Speak for Themselves, by Harry Winitsky [Feb. 15, 1930] The charges made by the CPUSA that recently expelled leader Jay Lovestone had acted improperly as a state's witness in the Harry Winitsky trial of 1920 are refuted in this article by Winitsky himself, published in the pages of The Revolutionary Age, official organ of the “CPUSA-Majority Group.”

Beginnings of Revolutionary Political Action in the USA, by Vern Smith [Oct. 1933] A pamphlet-length historical survey of the development of the American radical movement from 19th Century utopianism to the formation of the Socialist Party of America, as published in the pages of the theoretical journal of the CPUSA.
