8 May 2009: Added to the MIA Post Marx Political Economy Archive: J. Winternitz Notes on Some Problems of State Interventionism: 1949. John Stuart Mill: Essays on Some Unsettled Questions in Political Economy 1844. ‘Unsettled Questions’ is referenced in numerous places in Marx's writings. It discusses issues of foreign trade and what is now known as ‘Unequal Exchange'; Profit; Productive and Unproductive labour. John Stuart Mill: The Currency Question 1844. Originally an anonymous review of Tooke and Torrens in The Westminster Review, this article gives a brief overview of the issues at stake in the important debate between the ‘Currency School’ and the ‘Banking School’ over the theory of money and monetary policy. Mill clearly aligns himself with Tooke's criticisms. The Banking School (Tooke, Fullarton, Wilson and Mill) with its criticism of the ‘Quantity Theory’ of money, its theory of hoarding etc provided one of the principle bases on which Marx developed his theories of money, monetary circulation and credit. The Francois Quesnay Archive: Francois Quesnay was the founder of the ‘Physiocratic’ school of political economy which saw only agriculture as productive. The archive contains: Francois Quesnay—Tableau Economique: 1759, The first online English translation of a version of this famous document. The ‘Economical Table', which showed how the circulation of both use-values and exchange-values was determined ‘by the circulation and reproduction of commodities, in fact by the process of capital'(Marx) was the inspiration for the Reproduction Schema in Part III of Capital 2, for the Soviet ‘industrialisation debate', for planning models and, via Leontief, for the development of Input-Output Analysis. Francois Quesnay—On Natural Rights: 1765,The first online English translation. Francois Quesnay—The General Maxims 1767, The first online English translation. The Johann Karl Rodbertus Archive: Rodbertus was a conservative socialist who claimed that Marx had plagiarised him. He was one of the earliest to advance the naive but persistent underconsumptionist theory that capitalist crises are caused by the inability of workers to purchase all that they produce, a position criticised implicitly by Marx and explicitly by Engels. Rodbertus’ theory of rent was dissected by Marx in Theories of Surplus-Value. Johann Karl Rodbertus—Overproduction and Crises: 1850. First online edition. [Thanks to Steve Palmer]
