Name: Mitchell Abidor
My MIA work revolves primarily around translations from the French, Portuguese and Italian, in all of which I'm self-taught. My Portuguese and Italian work has been exclusively translations of texts from the Italian and Portuguese Communist Parties, both of which I have long admired. In French, however, I have translated original documents by figures and movements that have received short shrift in English: the revolution in Saint-Domingue that gave birth to Haiti, Quebec’s fight for independence, the left wing of the French Revolution, the Algerian revolution and the Frenchmen and women who supported it, the French anarchists of the late 19th and early twentieth centuries, and the Paris Commune.
Although I have lived for brief periods in Israel and France, and dream of living in Bisbee, Arizona, I've spent most of my life in the 11234 ZIP Code of Brooklyn. I’m married to the artist Joan Levinson. My son Pascal proudly bears the middle name of Missak, after Missak Manouchian, one of the great heroes and martyrs of the French Resistance.
