Formal Consultation – in Practice
David Ll. Davies
Industrial Welfare Society. 10s 6d.

This slim pamphlet covers a recent survey made of the attitudes of 98 firms towards formal joint consultation. The firms range from those employing thirteen workers to those employing 5,292. The survey sticks fairly closely to the dullest and most mechanical aspects of consultation, and hazards no adventurous speculation about why consultation works (if it works), where it works – indeed, what it means to ‘work.’ The presentation tends to obscure what results were obtained – but the overall conclusion seems clear, as an observer put it: ‘You’re not flogging that dead horse.’ They are.
