The next issue of ISR (May-June) will feature an article by George Novack entitled: Major Theories of History from the Greeks to Marxism. In this article Novack pays tribute to the basic contributions of Greek thought to the various schools of historiography. Speaking of the early Greeks, Novack observes:

“Just as they knew and named the major kinds of political organization from monarchy to democracy, so did the Greek thinkers of both the idealist and materialist schools originate the basic types of historical interpretation which have endured to the present day.”

It was on the basic foundation laid by the ancient Greeks that Marx and Engels elaborated their theory of historical materialism which comprises their own unique contribution to the theory of historical development.

George Novack, an associate editor of ISR, is author of the book The Origins of Materialism and co-editor with Isaac Deutscher of the paperback anthology of Trotsky’s writings The Age of Permanent Revolution.
