SUBJECT INDEX WOMEN AND REVOLUTION May-June 1971 through Spring 1980 (Issues No.1 through No. 20) This volume contains the issues of Women and Revolution from No.1, May-June 1971 through No. 20, Spring 1980. Women and Revolution is the journal of the Women's Commission of the Spartacist League U.S., reflecting the commitment of the Spartacist League and its international tendency to the fight for women's liberation through socialist revolution. Women and Revolution began as a publication of Spartacist members together with others from the left-feminist milieu in the San Francisco Bay Area who were won to the understanding that the struggle against women's oppression was inseparable from the liberation of the working class from the yoke of capitalist society. Issues Nos. 1 and 2, bearing the legend "The Newspaper of Revolutionary Women's Liberation," were published by Revolutionary Women of the Bay Area. With the coalescing of circles of women around the Spartacist program in several cities throughout the country, Women and Revolution was formed as a national organization, and Issue No.3 was published in New York. The articles in these three issues, while encapsulating the programmatic elements of a Marxist program, reflect the decentralized nature of their publication. Originally appearing in tabloid format, they are reproduced here in reduced size. By 1972 the amorphous radical women's movement for which Women and Revolution was created as an organ of polemical intervention had begun to disintegrate. This precipitated a debate within the Spartacist League and in local Women and Revolution circles on the future of the newspaper, which compelled us to rediscover the Theses for the Communist Women's Movement from the Second Congress of the Communist International. After substantial internal discussion, the Third National Conference of the SL/U.S. passed a resolution outlining our strategic perspective for the development of a women's section of the Leninist party to conduct special work among women, addressing their special .needs as an oppressed layer of society and drawing them to the party through a transitional organization. The Commission for Work Among Women was established under the direction of the SL Central Committee. Thereafter, beginning with Issue No.4 (Fall 1973), Women and Revolution was published under its auspices. Included in this volume is a leaflet circulated in 1969-70 as a position paper of the Revolutionary Marxist Caucus, a group of Spartacist supporters within the Students for a Democratic Society. The woman question was one of the focal points for the SL's position within the Progressive Labor-dominated SDS, upholding the Marxist position that the family is the main social institution oppressing women and is indissolubly linked to the maintenance of private property within class society. The leaflet was originally mimeographed on legal-sized paper; it has been retyped for reproduction here. GUIDE TO THE SUBJECT INDEX - The fullest listing is by SUBJECT. Subject headings are arranged alphabetically. Entries are listed chronologically with two exceptions: all entries comprising a series are listed together immediately following the first entry of the series; corrections immediately follow the relevant entry. An asterisk (*) after the page location of an entry indicates that a correction follows. - The numbers following each entry headline give the issue number, date and page number(s) for the article. Thus: Why We Support the ERA, No.4, Fall 1973 (24, 20-22) means the headline of the article, Issue No.4, Fall 1973, beginning on page 24 and continuing on pages 20, 21 and 22. - No entry is listed twice; refer to cross references for guidance in locating the subject head for particular articles. Cross references are of two types: those following the word "see" deal centrally with the subject head; those following the words "see also" are related articles. Subject heads in cross references are separated by a semicolon. Thus: Science-See Health; Natural History. means that articles on science can be found by going to the subject head HEALTH and by going to the subject head NATURAL HISTORY. -Individuals mentioned in articles are usually not listed separately unless the article is primarily about the given person. - Articles relating to foreign countries are listed under geographical headings and not necessarily under any other subject heading. Unless listed separately for some unusual reason, all foreign political organizations are listed under appropriate countries, while U.S. political organizations are listed under their organizational names. - Specific defense cases (e.g., Susan Saxe) will be found under CIVIL LIBERTIES. Articles which deal with the intersection of American blacks with the U.S. legal system (e.g., Joan Little) will be found under CIVIL RIGHTS, while general articles on the black question are listed under BLACK QUESTION. Articles which deal with the repression of homosexuals are listed under HOMOSEXUAL RIGHTS, while general articles on homosexuality are listed under HUMAN SEXUALITY. - Articles concerning present-day feminists are listed under FEMINISM. General historical articles on the woman question will be found under HISTORY OF THE LEFT AND WOMEN'S MOVEMENT. Historical articles specific to Bolshevik work among women will be found under BOLSHEVIK WORK AMONG WOMEN. - Abbreviations used in entries are: C: Correction R: Review L: Letter S: Series ABORTION-And see Germany; History of the Left and Women's Movement; Italy.
