NOTES on the scanning of 1922 and 1923 (Vol 1 and Vol 2) Young Worker: Vol 1 1922 Young Worker: Young Worker Volume 1 1922 (eight issues printed) was scanned in part from the holdings of original issues of Holt Labor Library, and in part from the Greenwood Reprint of this publication. Details: I scanned pages that were all text at 400 dpi single bit BW. I scanned pages that contained any kid of graphics or photos at 600 dpi single bit BW with careful attention to threshold levels. Where half tone photos appeared (particularly in 1923, vol 2) I often would crop the photo, and scan it in 600 dpi 8 bit gray scale, because I was unhappy with the result of single bit scanning even after meticulous attempt to get the best threshold level for the scan. For 1922, Vol 1: Issues 1 (Feb), 2 (March), and 3 (April) I scanned entirely from the Greenwoodr reprint. Issue 4 (May): The FRONT COVER and page 2 (back of front cover) I scanned from the Greenwood reprint, but all other pages of that issue I scanned from the original paper held by Holt Labor Library. (Holt's copy was missing its cover page.) Issues 5 - 8 (June-July thru December) I scanned entirely from original paper held by Holt Labor Library. -------------------- Vol 2 1923 Young Worker: NOTES on the scanning of 1923 Young Worker: Young Worker Volume 2 1923 (12 monthly issues printed) was scanned in part from the holdings of original issues of Holt Labor Library, and in part from the Greenwood Reprint of this publication. IMPORTANT RED INK NOTE In most (not all... October is one of the exceptions) of the original covers of the Young Worker of 1923, RED INK is employed as an integral part of the art. NOT just as a boarder or wash. In some of the art (such as Jan 1923) some gray charcoal areas are rendered in red ink. In others, a background building will be solid red, and foreground people or objects rendered in black ink. Unfortunately, Holt Labor Library's collection of original issues included only 7 of the 12 issues published that year. Worse, only four of those issues included the original covers. Three were missing their cover page and their final physical page (part of the paper used for the cover). And of the mere four issues in Holt's collection that came with cover pages, just THREE had covers that employed color. The October issue had a black and white only graphic image on its cover. Neither microfilm nor the Greenwood paper reprints of Young Worker preserve the color in the covers, for both are strictly black and white processes. Where red ink appeared in the cover, SOMETIMES its obvious in the Greenwood Reprint, for it's rendered distinctly as a shade of gray. But sometimes it's hard to impossible to tell whether or not red ink was employed by looking at the Greenwood reprint, particularly in the case of covers with characoal sketch graphic art. Sources of material for these images: From Holt Labor Library: Jan, May, June, July, Sept, Oct, and Nov. Original covers with red ink: Jan, June, Sept Original covers that were black and white: October From the Greenwood Reprint of Young Worker: Entire Issues: Feb, Mar, Apr, Aug, Dec Cover and rear pages (the rest from Holt's original): May, July, Nov Details of scanning parameters: I scanned pages that were all text at 400 dpi single bit BW. I scanned pages that contained any kid of graphics or photos at 600 dpi single bit BW with careful attention to threshold levels. Where half tone photos appeared I often croped the photo, and scan it in 600 dpi 8 bit gray scale, because I was unhappy with the result of single bit scanning even after meticulous attempt to get the best threshold level for the scan. Original covers with red ink (and one or two rear pages with a red ink boarder) are rendered in 24 bit color. Sometimes I ALSO rendered these as single bit black and white, to facilitate printing on a black and white laswer printer. ======================================================
