Date: Tue, 20 May 1997 From: lau kam to Subject: Re: E-Mail address and Hegel Hi Stephen, Concerning Hegel's Phenomenology, I prefer the translation by A.V. Miller (published by Oxford University Press) over Baillie. Miller's translation is more recent and more 'readable' particularly for someone like me English is a second language. It also has the merit of a chapter analysis at the end of the book outlining Hegel's main points. The following commentaries had helped me in getting a better picture at Hegel's complicated arguments: 1) In the Spirit of Hegel by R C Solomon 2) A Reading of Hegel's Phenomenology by Q Lauer 3) Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit by W Marx last but not least : 4) Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts 1844 by K Marx I think some knowledge on Kant, Fichte, and Schelling is also important in understanding Hegel's PhG (K Marx has demonstrated his grasp on this respect in the last part of his doctoral thesis). I've bumped into one or two articles concerning PhG on the internet but I need to check the exact site address first. Hope this is helpful to you in unveiling the 'secret birthplace of Hegel's philosophy". With regards, Alex LAU
