Born in Sydney, Verre Gordon Childe (1892-1957) became one of the greatest archaeologists of his day (Professor of Prehistoric Archaeology at Edinburgh University, 1927-1946 and Professor of European archaeology at the University of London, 1946-1956), but 1916-1919 Childe was involved in the labour movement and 1919-1921 he was Private Secretary to the NSW ALP leader John Storey, and it is on this experience that this worked is based. He returned to Australia in 1957 and appears to have committed suicide.
