Publisher’s Note: This pamphlet contains two discussion papers addressing the current challenges facing the U.S. left. The first, “The Left in a Changing World,” presents an assessment of international and domestic politics and discusses the state of the progressive movement and the left. The second, “Marxism-Leninism Today and the Line of March,” addresses the current debates and upheavals in Marxist-Leninist ideology and the communist movement.

These papers were written as background material for the October 1989 conference which transformed the Line of March into the Frontline Political Organization. The main documents approved by that conference (a summation of Line of March’s reexamination, re-direction and democratization, and the political perspective of the new organization which emerged from that process) have also been published as a pamphlet entitled “The Transformation of Line of March.” To order, send $3 per copy plus 20% postage to Line of March, P.O. Box 3538, Oakland, CA 94609. Please make your check payable to Frontline Political Organization.

Also available is a set of documents from the debate which took place within the Line of March over whether or not its previous outlook, in particular its approach to building a Marxist-Leninist party, had been qualitatively flawed by ultra-leftism. For copies of “Line of March’s Debate Over Ultra-Leftism and Party Building,” send $4 each plus 20% postage to the address above.
