Militant
[London]

(1969-1995)

London. Founded in 1964 under the name Militant, it styled itself as the “Marxist voice of Labour and Youth” and played an important role in bringing together a strong left-wing grouping within the British Labour Party, so much so that the group came to be known as the Militant tendency after the newspaper they sold and read. In 1997, Militant Labour (successor to the Militant tendency) changed its name to the Socialist Party, and the Militant newspaper was renamed the Socialist the same year. It is edited and written by the members and supporters of the political party publishing it. Sold by its members, it is a non-profit paper, carrying news and reports from around the country and from overseas. It was one of the most widely read Trotskyist weeklies published in Britain in the 1970 and 1980s. The collection here is almost complete, missing only half a dozen issues. We will add more years as they become available. Militant International Review was launched in 1969 a few years after the founding of the tendency. It provided a longer "magazine" style indept articles for Militant supporters and constituted it's theoretical magazine for decades. Founded a quartely magazine, at various times through its publication history it attempted a go at 6 times a year. In 1995 Militant, now renamed the Socialist Party of England and Wales, started a new magazine, Socialism Today
