Thousands marched in Istanbul, Turkey, on Saturday against the possibility of a military coup.

With placards saying “Raise your voice against the coup” and “No to a military takeover”, this was the first demonstration of its kind in Turkey.

The AK Party government has faced constant harassment from the military and repeated attempts to overthrow it since it was first elected in 2002.

The nationalist ruling elite objects to the AK’s Islamic tradition. This state has begun proceedings to close down the party.

Earlier this month, the constitutional court ruled that recent attempts to legalise the wearing of Islamic headscarves in universities were unconstitutional.

Even opponents of the government agree that the decision makes a mockery of democracy.
