Hegel discussion group people - you may be interested in this reply from Lois Holzman, one of the authors of the Vygotsky book: ========================================================= From: lholzman@sescva.esc.edu To: andy@werple.mira.net.au Re: Re: your book and my activity Dear Andy Thanks for your note about our book and your work. It's especially encouraging to hear that it is tool-and- result that was inspiring to you since that is the gist of our work (and so few recognize that). To read more about our therapeutic practice, you can get a few books--I'll describe them. Newman and I have written two more academic books -- Unscientific Psychology is one (Praeger) and the End of Knowing is the other (Routledge, this summer). The End includes a chapter with what we call performed conversations and one istherapeutic. Then Fred has written two popular books - - Let's Develop and Performance of a Lifetime. And I have one on learning and developemnt to be out this Fall (Schools for Growth, Erlbaum). All of this and descriptions of our programs can be found at our web site -- www.castillo.org. There are articles to download there too. I'd love to be in touch and discuss these matters so check out some of this, let me know about your work, and we'll talk! Also, be sure to read about our upcoming conference / retreat in June. If you could come to it, that would be very valuable. Enjoyed the book greatly. The concept of "tool-and-result" I'm finding very helpful - in fact completing by words what I was beginning to work with. I don't understand why I read to p. 196 before a single instance of your work appears and then is not completed! And little picture of your social-therapy work would have helped me picture and understand your work much better. I have joined a political group here, they are mostly very young (I am 51 with 30 years political experience as a Marxist - i.e your generation!) all very good activists but very very weak in Thoery. My task is how to create that ZPD factory/ZPD where the group can develop and with that hopefully develop those that they work with in the various social movements. Your book has given me a great impetus on how to approach this, but I would appreciate any comments you have. Andy Blunden
