Letters of Olive Shreiner

To Havelock Ellis
c/o Madame Lafargue

24th May, 1887.

Paris does my asthma good. But I feel very desolate here. Paris is a much worse place for a woman to be alone in than London. It must be glorious for a man. It is not so sad as London, but all my life is there. I sometimes think I am not going, but gone, mad. It's so Godforsaken everywhere.... Mrs. Lafargue [Eleanor 's sister] is like Eleanor, not half so nice, but very she says Lafargue is a fine fellow.
