Summary of an article by A. Jax. (Shanghai) in The Socialist Review (1913, No. 1).
|
The article is headed “Reaction in China”. Author gives translations of the statutes of the Chinese socialist parties and organisa- tions. He is struck by their “vagueness” and “pious wishes”. In Chinese, socialism and socie- ty are one and the same word (Shih Hui). A number of socialists have been executed. A work- er, Wen, (from Shanghai) (executed) founded the “Workers’ Party of the Chinese Republic”. Early in 1913 it carried out a successful three-day strike of Shanghai silversmiths. Its programme is extremely unclear. There was also a “Chinese Socialist Party”, as well as a “Pure (sic!) Socialist Party”. Most of the leaders have been executed. Yüan Shih-kai crushed these parties. |
