The Library of Materialism

Edited by A. Deborin and David Ryazanov

Materialism has hitherto been neglected. Idealism naturally occupied the place of honour. Even the greatest materialist thinkers, whose works defined an era and exerted an enormous influence on philosophical and scientific thought, remain unknown to the Russian reader to this day. The Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels Institute considers it its duty to fill this gap and make the original works of the materialists accessible to the Russian reader. This is all the more necessary given that materialism constitutes the philosophical foundation of Marxism. Without materialism, there is no Marxism. Therefore, for an in-depth study and understanding of the Marx-Engels worldview, a thorough familiarity with their predecessors in all fields of thought and science is absolutely essential. Since we are dealing with the philosophical foundations of Marxism, the study of the history of materialism is a must for every Marxist.

However, the history of materialism is best studied through the original works of the thinkers themselves.

The works of the classics of materialism will be accompanied by prefaces and explanatory critical notes to facilitate their assimilation and understanding.

The library comprises works by the following authors:

  1. Lucretius. De rerum natura (On the Nature of Things).
  2. Gassendi. Selected Works.
  3. Hobbes. 1) On Bodies, 2) On Man, 3) Leviathan, and others.
  4. La Mettrie. A Treatise on the Soul. The System of Epicurus. Man as a Machine. Man as a Plant. A Discourse on Happiness.
  5. Helvétius. On the Mind. On Man.
  6. Holbach. The System of Nature. The Social System. Christianity Unmasked, etc.
  7. Diderot. Selected Works.
  8. Robinet. On Nature.
  9. John Toland. Selected Works.
  10. Priestley. An Inquiry into Matter and Spirit.
