A delegation of journalists from The Call has just returned from a historic six-week trip.

The delegation, led by Call Editor Daniel Burstein, spent more than a month in the People’s Republic of China, and then became the first Americans to visit Democratic Kampuchea (formerly Cambodia) since the liberation of that country in 1975.

On arrival at the Chicago airport May 6, The Call staff members were welcomed home by a group of friends, including a representative of the Group of Kampuchean Residents in America, who presented Burstein with a bouquet of flowers. The next evening, a large crowd of supporters packed the newly- opened Liberator Bookstore on Chicago’s. Southside to greet the delegation’s return and hear its first report.

The highlight of the delegation’s travels in China was a friendly and wide-ranging talk held on May 2 with Teng Hsiao-ping, Vice Chairman of the Chinese Communist Party and Vice Premier of the State Council. Teng dwelt especially on the defeat of the “gang of four” and the great unity of the people today in marching forward towards the goal of modernizing China, as outlined by Chairman Hua Kuo-feng in his report to the recent Fifth National People’s Congress.

The Call delegation visited 14 different cities and. localities in China. These included places as diverse as the Shengli Oilfields, where rapid progress is being made in modernizing industry and Hainan Island, where the Li and Meo nationalities enjoy regional autonomy under the socialist system.

Everywhere, The Call reporters collected interviews. photographs and other information on the new achievements in China’s socialist revolution. Over the next few months, this material will be presented in a series of major articles and features to bring these points closer to home for our readers.

Beginning with this issue, The Call will carry the delegation’s eyewitness report on the situation in Democratic Kampuchea. Combatting the vicious campaign of lies and slanders against Kampuchea which is being carried out by the imperialists in the U.S. press, The Call will bring our readers the truth about the new revolutionary society in Kampuchea .and the development of socialism there.

Now is the time to subscribe to The Call, so as not to miss any of these important reports!
