The People & The Worker
[1899 – 1904]

Introduction

In July 1899 the Socialist Labor Party of America was split in two when dissidents opposed to the trade union tactics, journalistic machinations, and internal regime of the party administration attempted their removal through the semiannual meeting of the General Committee of Section New York. These opponents, who included Manhattan lawyers Henry Slobodin and Morris Hillquit, trade unionists, and journalists surrounding the daily New Yorker Volkszeitung, ultimately failed in their effort to remove powerful party editors Daniel DeLeon and Hugo Vogt, National Secretary Henry Kuhn, and their cothinkers on the National Executive Committee of the SLP.

A parallel organization emerged with the dissidents (pejoratively referred to as "Kangaroos" by the DeLeon faction) establishing their own edition of the SLP's official organ, The People, which made use of an identical banner, format, and numbering system to the rival regular edition. Over time this dissident SLP organization rebranded itself as the Social Democratic Party, establishing headquarters in Springfield, Massachusetts, with a view to rapid merger with a party by the same name based in Chicago. Together these two Social Democratic Parties conducted a joint presidential campaign in 1900, working together for a ticket featuring Eugene V. Debs of the Chicago SDP for President and Job Harriman of the Springfield SDP for Vice-President.

Unity of these groups would not take place until the summer of 1901, when the Socialist Party of America (SPA) was formed. During the run up to this unification, the Springfield organization changed the name of its official organ from The People to The Worker, with the publication's numbering system unaltered.

All known issues of this important publication are presented here. It should be noted that many issues of The People from 1900 and 1901 are either lost to the world or remain to be discovered in libraries and archives around the United States. This deficiency is regrettable but unavoidable. The Worker continued its weekly publication schedule through December 1908, when it was discontinued in favor of the New York Call, a daily newspaper launched six months earlier.
