MARX, REVELATIONS ABOUT THE COLOGNE COMMUNIST
TRIAL
, WITH AN INTRODUCTION BY ENGELS

In the article “On the History of the Communist League” (dated October 8, 1885) in the pamphlet: Revelations about the Cologne Communist Trial (Zurich, 1885) Engels writes, at the end of the article:

... Marx, “the most hated, most slandered man of his time” (p. 17)....

Marx’s postscript (January 8, 1875) to the same pamphlet:

...“After the failure of the 1848 revolution, the
German workers’ movement continued to exist only
in the form of theoretical propaganda, which was
confined moreover to narrow circles, and the Prussian
Government did not for a moment deceive itself
about its practical harmlessness” (73).
