American Socialist Quarterly/American Socialist Monthly/Socialist Review
Socialist Review was the official theoretical journal of the Socialist Party of America in the 1930s and 1940s. Starting out as American Socialist Quarterly the name changed to American Socialist Monthly and then to Socialist Review in September 1937. The journal reflected the dominant “Militant” tendency that was composed of the ‘center’ leadership of the SPA whose main leader was Norman Thomas, though he was not formally part of this caucus in the Party. In the Party was also a growing left wing lead by the American supporters of the movement for the Fourth International lead by former CPUSA member James P. Cannon and grouped around the weekly periodical Socialist Appeal. Finally, there was also the right-wing tendency associated with the magazine New Leader inside the SPA.
