Manuel Gómez [Charles Shipman] [Jesús Ramírez]
1895 - 1986
He was born Charles Francis Phillips in New York City. He attended the Columbia School of Journalism and became politically active during WW I. In 1917 he was the Organizing Secretary of the Collegiate Anti-Militarism League. In the following year he traveled to Mexico and began working with the Communist Party of Mexico. As a representative of the CPM he attended the Second World Congress of the Communist International. He began using the name Jesús Ramírez.
In 1921 he returned to the United States under the assumed name, Manuel Gómez, which he continued to use during his Communist years. From 1923 to 1928 he was the Secretary of the All-America Anti-Imperialist League, affiliated with the Comintern and CPUSA. In 1928 he was a member of the CPUSA delegation to the Sixth World Congress of the Communist International.
In 1929 he adopted a new name, Charles Shipman, but continued for several years to write as Manuel Gómez for the Communist press, even after he was formally expelled from the Party in 1932. He only publicly broke with the Party in 1937.
